Statue of Deng Xiaoping.
The six-meter-high statue has a base that is 3.68 meters high. The engraving on the north side of the granite wall that lies to the north of the statue is an inscription of Deng’s statement he made during his 1984 inspection in Shenzhen: “The development and experiences of Shenzhen have proven that our policy of establishing special economic zones is correct.” On the south side of the wall are Deng’s words: “I am the son of the Chinese people. I love my country and my people deeply.” “邓小平同志”, which was inscribed by Comrade Jiang Zemin, can be seen on the front of the base.
Shenzhen, which has been the “testing ground” and “vanguard” of China’s reform and opening up, is the first special economic zone that was personally initiated by Deng. In memory of his great achievements, the construction of his statue is the consequence of the wishes of Shenzhen people.
The main architect of the Deng Xiaoping statue, Professor Teng Wenjin, is the former president of Shenzhen Sculpture Academy. Archives show that in 1995, when the CPC Shenzhen Municipal Committee and Shenzhen Municipal Government started to design the statue, they contacted Deng’s family. They stated that the image of Deng from 1979 to the early 1980s was the best choice for the statue. Deng was into swimming and walking. He was a lively person and had a firm stand on issues. When he walked, his footsteps were always fast. So the idea for the statue was that it should be an image of walking, which reflects the essence of Deng’s spirit and also symbolizes that the progress of the reform and opening up should be faster.
Teng then made a small model that was more than 20 centimeters high and photographed it for Comrade Xiaoping’s family for their final decision. On the basis of the sample, four sculptors including Teng Wenjin, Bai Lansheng, Liu Lin and Yang Jinhuan jointly built the statue at the Military Museum of the Chinese People’s Revolution in Beijing. It took seven years to complete the statue.
In 1996, discussions about the location for the statue of Deng Xiaoping were repeatedly held by the CPC Shenzhen Municipal Committee and Shenzhen Municipal Government. After rejecting numerous proposals including Caiwuwei Sanjiaodi, Huanggang Port, Futian’s central area and the Compound of the CPC Shenzhen Municipal Committee, the statue of Deng Xiaoping was finally located in Lianhua Hill Park, because there people can not only see the statue but can also observe the city’s urban landscape that symbolizes the achievements of reform and opening up.
On November 14, 2000, the statue of Deng Xiaoping was erected and Comrade Jiang Zemin unveiled it. The statue has been overseeing the development of Shenzhen for 23 years and it also inspires Shenzhen to further forge ahead.
