2010年8月1日，一篇名为《来深十八年，再回忆那些曾令我热血沸腾的口号》的网络热帖引起了全社会的广泛关注与讨论。仅一个月，这篇帖子的点击率就超过3万，跟贴数近300篇，受到极大关注。发帖的网民呼吁大家将多年来根植于深圳本土所产生的口号进行收集、总结，让更多喜欢、热爱深圳的人可以借此总结过去、展望未来。
An online post, titled “Recalling those inspiring slogans after living in Shenzhen for 18 years” dated August 1, 2010, aroused widespread concern and discussion. In just one month, the post received more than 30,000 hits and nearly 300 comments. The post called on people to collect and summarize the slogans that have been rooted in Shenzhen for many years, so that more people who like and love Shenzhen can use the information to summarize the past and look forward to the future.
彼时正值深圳经济特区建立30周年之际，深圳报业集团借此热潮举办了“深圳最有影响力的十大观念”评选活动。该活动先在第一阶段海选出103条候选观念，后由评委会讨论选出30条候选观念，最终以网络评选和专家评委会评选权重各占50%的比例评选出最终结果，分别为“时间就是金钱，效率就是生命”“空谈误国，实干兴邦”“敢为天下先”“改革创新是深圳的根，深圳的魂”“让城市因热爱读书而受人尊重”“鼓励创新，宽容失败”“实现市民文化权利”“送人玫瑰，手有余香”“深圳，与世界没有距离”“来了，就是深圳人”。
At the time of the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, Shenzhen News Group held the selection of Shenzhen’s top 10 most influential concepts. A total of 103 concepts were shortlisted in the preliminary stage. Then 30 concepts were selected by the judges’ panel and the final results were determined by allocating 50% to the online vote and 50% to the jury vote. The finalized top 10 concepts of Shenzhen were: “Time is money, efficiency is life,” “Empty talk endangers the nation, practical work brings prosperity,” “Dare to become the world’s first,” “Reform and innovation are the root and soul of Shenzhen,” “Let Shenzhen be respected for its enthusiasm for reading,” “Innovation encouraged and failure tolerated,” “Fulfilling the cultural rights of citizens,” “The fragrance of the rose lingers on the hand that gives,” “Shenzhen embraces the world,” and “You are a Shenzhener once you come here.”

With a strong appeal, the top 10 concepts of Shenzhen signify the spirit of the times and express the recognition and understanding of Shenzhen people about the city, strengthening the city’s sense of self-consciousness and cultural identity.
其中，“时间就是金钱，效率就是生命”“空谈误国，实干兴邦”“敢为天下先”“改革创新是深圳的根，深圳的魂”等观念是中国特色社会主义市场经济率先破壳发展的标志；“鼓励创新，宽容失败”“送人玫瑰，手有余香”“深圳，与世界没有距离”“来了，就是深圳人”等观念体现了深圳开放包容、兼收并蓄的城市风格；“让城市因热爱读书而受人尊重”“实现市民文化权利”等观念则为城市转型发展提供了持续的文化动力，展现了深圳人的文化自觉与担当。
Some of the concepts signify the development of the socialist market economy with Chinese characteristics; some reflect the open and inclusive style of the city; and some continuously drive the transformation and development of the city, showing the cultural self-consciousness and commitment of Shenzheners.

The top 10 concepts of Shenzhen cover not only the history of the cultural-ethical advancement of Shenzhen, but also reflect the great process of the reform and opening up as well as the cultural values of Shenzhen.
