Shenzhen Vice Mayor Wang Shourui (R) and Sergey Cheremin, minister of the Moscow city government and head of the Moscow city foreign economic and international relations department, shake hands after signing the memorandum of friendly exchange and cooperation in Shenzhen yesterday.

Shenzhen signed a memorandum of friendly exchange and cooperation with Moscow yesterday, establishing friendly exchange relations with the capital of Russia.

The memorandum was signed by Shenzhen Vice Mayor Wang Shourui and Sergey Cheremin, minister of the Moscow city government and head of the Moscow city foreign economic and international relations department, who is leading a delegation to Shenzhen for a two-day visit from yesterday to today.

Moscow is Russia's political, economic, cultural, financial, and transportation center. The city is also the largest industrial center in Russia, with its total industrial output ranking first in the country.

The establishment of friendly exchange relations between Shenzhen and Moscow is expected to promote practical cooperation in multiple fields such as trade and investment, technology, transportation, and education.

According to Wang, Shenzhen has continuously strengthened exchanges with Moscow in recent years. Shenzhen MSU-BIT University, a Chinese-foreign cooperative university jointly founded by the Shenzhen Municipal Government, Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU), and Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT), has served as a perfect example of cooperation.

"The establishment of friendly exchange relations between Shenzhen and Moscow opens a new chapter in cooperation between the two cities," Wang said.

Cheremin said that his first visit to Shenzhen was in 1994. During the current trip, he was amazed by the tremendous changes that have taken place in the city, which has emerged as a core city in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and a technology hub.

"The cooperation between the two cities is of great significance. Moscow can draw from Shenzhen's successful experience," Cheremin said, emphasizing transportation and infrastructure as pivotal areas for bilateral cooperation.

So far, Shenzhen has established friendly relations with 93 cities representing 58 countries, including 24 sister cities and 69 friendly exchange cities.
