There has been a saying: “If Huaqiangbei sneezes, the whole country’s electronics market would catch a cold.” As a symbol of Shenzhen, Huaqiangbei has made important contributions to the development of Shenzhen’s electronics industry at the beginning of the reform and opening up, and also created countless fortunes and miracles.
When the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone was established, it had a poor electronics industrial foundation and antiquated technologies. There was only one radio factory with more than 100 employees and it could only produce transformers, motors, agricultural black lights and audio power amplifiers. Following the period of “three supplies and one compensation,” the Shenzhen electronics industry made certain progress, but the lack of technical talent and the slow introduction of foreign capital still existed. To solve these problems, the Shenzhen Municipal Government decided to take advantage of the potential of a strong domestic electronics industrial foundation and focus on the development of the electronics industry.
In the early 1980s, the Urban Construction and Planning Committee of Shenzhen decided to construct an industrial zone that would focus on the electronics industry and processing with imported materials – the Shangbu Industrial Zone in the current Huaqiangbei area.. Since then, a large number of electronics industry enterprises such as Aihua, Jinghua, Huafa, Huaqiang and Hualianfa have gathered there. In September 1985, in order to solve the problems of a “scattered, disorganized and low-efficiency” structure of the electronics industry in Shenzhen and improve the adaptability of the electronics industry to an export-oriented economy, the government agreed to set up the Shenzhen Electronics Industry (Group) Company by combining several electronics industry enterprises. In January 1988, the company changed its name to Shenzhen Electronics Group Co. Ltd. (SEG), and in March of the same year the SEG supporting market was set up in Huaqiangbei.

With the development of a complete industrial chain and the subsequent agglomeration of electronics-related industries, Huaqiangbei has gradually become the largest production, wholesale and retail center of electronic products in South China. Numerous well-known local enterprises were born there. In October 2008, the China Electronics Association awarded Huaqiangbei with the title of “China’s No. 1 Electronics Street.”
