Zhongying Street: shopping paradise

Updated : 2023-03-09 07:40:00

Prices of imported commodities in Hong Kong are lower than on the Chinese mainland, as Hong Kong products are duty-free and the favorable exchange rate of RMB to the Hong Kong dollar also determines the prices. At the beginning of the 1980s, Zhongying Street was known as a shopping paradise for its commodities with reasonable prices and good quality, attracting tourists from all over the country.

In 1979, shortly after the establishment of Shenzhen City, Zhongying Street received groups of tourists from inland cities every day, which made the shops on the Shenzhen side very popular while the shops on the Hong Kong side were mostly used as residences or for storage. In early September 1979, after a strong rainstorm, the store of “Wangxingji” on the Hong Kong side was flooded and the owner moved his goods to the street to dry. Most of these goods were imported umbrellas, shoes and clothes, which attracted a lot of tourists who asked the prices. Inspired by this, the owner quickly opened the store. A few days later, other shops also opened to the tourists. Shortly thereafter, dozens of shops on the Hong Kong side reopened to visitors from all over the country and the business and trade industries on both sides of Zhongying Street entered a period of rapid development.

From 1979 to 1988, the sales volume of Zhongying Street jumped from 5.9 million yuan to 1.57 billion yuan. At that time, many merchants sold Hong Kong gold products in Zhongying Street because of their fashionable and beautiful designs. During the peak time of the “gold fever,” there were 47 gold shops on both sides of Zhongying Street. From May to October 1988, Zhongying Street saw a total of five tons of gold ornaments sold worth HK$650 million. In addition to gold, other daily necessities such as cloth, clothes, umbrellas, soap, instant noodles and monosodium glutamate were also sold. In the 1990s, cosmetics, household appliances and photography equipment were sold well. After 2000, digital products, milk powder, delicacies and cosmetics became new marketable commodities.

With the return of Hong Kong to China, the opening of free travel and the development of the mainland economy, the commercial tourism economy of Zhongying Street started to level off and the buying boom of gold, electrical appliances and digital products gradually faded. In 2008, the Shenzhen Municipal Government issued the Implementation Plan on Further Strengthening the Business Management of Zhongying Street to further optimize the commercial positioning of Zhongying Street for businesses mainly selling daily necessities and cosmetics and for other retail businesses. Zhongying Street has become the choice of many Shenzheners for buying daily necessities and cosmetics from Hong Kong. Its reputations of “century-old street” and “shopping paradise” are still enduring.
