The tomb of the last emperor of the Southern Song Dynasty.

The tomb, located in Chiwan Village in Zhaoshang Subdistrict, Nanshan District, belongs to Zhao Bing, the last emperor of the Southern Song Dynasty. The third son of Emperor Duzong, he succeeded to the throne at the age of only 7 amid wars between the Southern Song and Yuan armies after his two elderly brothers, also the last but two and last but one emperors of the Southern Song Dynasty, either died of illness or got caught by the enemy, respectively.

In February 1279, the army of the Southern Song Dynasty was defeated by the army of the Yuan Dynasty in a battle in Guangdong’s Xinhui (today’s Jiangmen City). Having foreseen that the fall of the Southern Song Dynasty was unavoidable, Lu Xiufu, the highest-rank official of Zhao Bing’s government, made the resolute decision to throw himself and the young emperor into the sea. The death of the emperor signaled the collapse of the Southern Song Dynasty.

Legend has it that after Lu’s jump into the sea, the remains of Zhao Bing drifted to the waters off Chiwan and were fished out by an old monk who was attracted by flocks of birds hovering above the remains. Having recognized the identity of the remains from the clothing on it, the old monk then buried the young emperor’s remains at the foot of Xiaonanshan Mountain.

In 1983, the tomb was listed as a municipal-level cultural heritage protection site. It is by far the only tomb of an emperor discovered within Guangdong Province.
