First discovered in 1983, the Tiezai Mountain Ancient Tomb Cluster is located on the eastern slope of Tiezai Mountain in Xixiang Subdistrict, Bao’an District and covers an area of about 27,185 square meters. From 1983 to 2000, several archaeological rescue excavations were carried out on Tiezai Mountain, unearthing nearly 360 tombs of various types from the Han Dynasty to the Ming and Qing dynasties, discovering tombs with chronological inscriptions from the Eastern Han Dynasty and a large number of precious cultural relics. These discoveries were recognized as one of the “National Important Archaeological Discoveries in 2000.”

In addition to those important cultural relics, various tombs built in different forms were also discovered. The earth pit tombs, brick tombs of different shapes and combined tombs are discoveries of great empirical significance for the investigation of burial techniques and customs in the Pearl River Delta region.

In general, the Tiezai Mountain Ancient Tomb Cluster is large in scale and number. Also, it is densely arranged, spanning a long period of time. The distribution of the tombs is regular, and the burial forms are diverse and rich in connotation, providing valuable information for the study of politics, economy, history, anthropology, architectural history and folk cultures in Shenzhen from the time of the establishment of Dongguan Prefecture through the Ming and Qing dynasties.

As a physical “chronicle” of Shenzhen, the Tiezai Mountain Ancient Tomb Cluster proves that the people in ancient Shenzhen created a splendid Chinese civilization together with other ethnic groups as early as the Eastern Han Dynasty. In November 2008, the Tiezai Mountain Ancient Tomb Cluster was recognized by the Guangdong Provincial People’s Government as a cultural relic protection unit of Guangdong Province. In the same year, the construction of Tiezai Mountain Park began. In 2018, it underwent expansion and renovation.
