在改革开放初期,深圳就掀起了读书的热潮。从上世纪80年代特区建设初期“勒紧腰带”建起全国最现代化的图书馆(深圳图书馆),到2022年已举办23届的“深圳读书月”,阅读已是深圳的城市底色之一。
In the early days of reform and opening up, Shenzhen had set off a reading craze. From the construction of the most modern library in the country (the Shenzhen Library) to the Shenzhen Reading Month that as of 2022 has been held 23 times, reading has been one of the city’s features.
读书是如何成为深圳人多年来的一种习惯的呢?从档案中,我们或许可以找到答案。

据1982年的《深圳特区报》记载,1978年宝安县(深圳市前身)人均购书量已达到了4.2册。一份档案资料显示,1983年,深圳市总工会举办了37个业余学习班,参加者达870多人。深圳市新华书店3000多套《数理化自学丛书》不到半年时间便被抢购一空;4000多套《业余工农初高中进修课本》也很快售光。书店还收到不少读者来信,希望购买《从鸦片战争到五四运动》一书,同时求购政治和中国近、现代史书籍。
According to a 1982 edition of the Shenzhen Special Zone Daily, the per capita purchase of books of Bao’an County (the predecessor of Shenzhen) reached 4.2 books in 1978. Archives show that in 1983, the Shenzhen Federation of Trade Unions held 37 amateur learning classes, which were participated by more than 870 people. The Shenzhen Xinhua Bookstore sold more than 3,000 sets of “Self-learning Series of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry” in less than half a year, and more than 4,000 sets of “Amateur Workers’ and Peasants’ Junior and Senior High School Textbooks” also soon sold out.
1983年5月7日,深圳市总工会、共青团、妇联等单位联合向全市职工和青少年发出《大力提倡业余读书,开展”多读书、读好书”活动的倡议书》。该倡议书中指出,作为特区的建设者和创造者,深圳应该除创造物质文明之外,建设高度的精神文明,这就要求大家以知识作为建设新世界的巨大力量,而读书是获取知识的重要途径,因而各单位大力提倡全市职工和青少年群众利用业余时间开展”多读书,读好书”活动。
On May 7, 1983, the Shenzhen Federation of Trade Unions, the Communist Youth League of China Shenzhen Committee, the Shenzhen Women’s Federation and other units jointly issued a proposal to advocate reading across the city. The proposal pointed out that Shenzhen should advance cultural-ethical progress in addition to material advances and that reading is an important way to acquire the knowledge to attain these goals.

多读书、读好书”活动的开展,推动80年代深圳青年职工形成了新一轮富有时代特点的”读书热”。这次读书学习活动的主题是”振兴中华”,共有四大特点:一是范围广,经调查,多家单位参与的青年职工达70%以上;二是形式多样、生动活泼、内容丰富;三是积极性高涨,实现了从”要我学”到”我要学”的转变;四是联系实际,针对性强。活动专门设置了英语及金融知识的学习,有效提高了职工的文化水平。
The activity of “read more and read good books” had created a reading craze among Shenzhen’s young employees in the 1980s. Themed “rejuvenating China,” it had four major characteristics. First, it had a wide scope. Second, it was diverse, lively and rich in content. Third, the participants had high enthusiasm, realizing the transformation from “I have to learn” to “I want to learn.” Fourth, it was practical and targeted. English and finance classes were also set up, which effectively improved the educational level of the employees.

The Shenzhen Special Economic Zone has been promoting cultural-ethical advancement and cultivating citizens’ advanced consciousness of learning since its establishment. A series of reading activities has provided strong internal and external impetus for the reading craze in Shenzhen.
