At the beginning of the reform and opening up, there were still many gaps in the cultural undertakings of Shenzhen. One example is the lack of access to television programs. In 1980, Shenzhen citizens could not watch CCTV and Guangdong Province television programs, and families who had televisions had access only to Hong Kong TV programs.
In order to change this situation, on August 19, 1982, after the Ministry of Radio and Television approved the establishment of Shenzhen TV Station, the Shenzhen TV Station preparation team was also established. On January 1, 1984, the station successfully premiered its first broadcast.
Notice on the opening of Shenzhen TV Station for trial broadcasting while increasing the time for relaying provincial TV programs.
Due to the lack of equipment and personnel, Shenzhen TV Station first adopted the method of frequency insertion for trial broadcasting and broadcasted on alternate days. It broadcasted the self-compiled Shenzhen TV Station programs through the channel that broadcasts the programs of Guangdong TV Station (Channel 10). In this way, Shenzhen citizens could watch TV programs from the Chinese mainland, and Shenzhen TV programs could gradually “go” into thousands of households.
Within two years, Shenzhen TV Station had filmed and broadcasted many TV dramas, most of which were taken locally and reflected the spirit of how Shenzhen people pioneered and struggled.
Now the Shenzhen Archives still has the original script, scene list, dialogue book, sub-scene book, and other precious files of the 1984 Shenzhen TV production "Hua Deng Chu Zhao" (“When Lights Turned On”). Among them, a letter of the Shenzhen TV Station to the audience reads: "The writers and directors of our station created the TV series 'Hua Deng Chu Zhao,' which truly reflects the life of people in Shenzhen through the story of young general manager Hong Tao, praising the rapid pace of the construction of Shenzhen and the spirit of the joint venture parties working together to start a business."
These dramas enriched the spiritual and cultural life of Shenzhen citizens at that time, and also preserved the memories of the growth of Shenzhen people from the time when the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone was first established.
With the improvement of technology, the programs of Shenzhen TV Station became increasingly rich. In 1994, Shenzhen TV Station set up Shenzhen TV 1 and Shenzhen TV 2; in 1996, it opened the column “Cantonese News;” and in 1998, it added a “Midnight News” column. Shenzhen TV Station’s daily news broadcast grew to be two hours long, and continuously met the people’s demand for diversified culture. On June 28, 2004, the Shenzhen TV Station was merged into the Shenzhen Media Group and continued to serve the audience with its new look.
