Staffers from the city’s power supply bureau lay a superconducting cable. China’s first self-developed new superconducting cable, with five times the transmission capacity of a traditional cable, was put into use in Shenzhen on Tuesday. The 4,000-meter cable, 17.5 centimeters in diameter, has a transmission capacity as high as 43 megavolt amperes (MVA) which is equivalent to the power demand for four high-speed trains running at 350 kilometers per hour simultaneously. It will provide reliable power supply for Ping An Finance Center, the tallest skyscraper in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. The fully domestic-made new superconducting cables will provide solutions to the world’s megacities that face problems in power supply in high load density areas.
