Tourists aboard a cruise ship enjoy the picturesque views of Yantian District's sea and mountains during the New Year holiday.

Shenzhen's rail transit network, including trams, carried 10.1734 million passengers Dec. 31, 2023, marking the seventh time it set a ridership record in the year.

Shenzhen has become the fourth city on the Chinese mainland to surpass the 10 million ridership threshold after Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou, according to Shenzhen Metro Group.

In 2023, Shenzhen's rail transit network broke historical ridership records seven times, with 8.529 million riders Feb. 17, 8.611 million Feb. 24, 8.725 million March 3, 8.888 million April 28, and 9.337 million July 7.

On Dec. 29, the ridership exceeded 9.7 million, reaching a historical high of 9.723 million. On that day, the ridership intensity of the rail transit network was 17,500 rides per kilometer, ranking first in the country.

"This New Year holiday has witnessed record-breaking ridership twice. It was mainly due to a higher number of tourists visiting Shenzhen and citizens going on vacation, combined with commuting for work," a staffer from Shenzhen Metro Group said.
