A busy scene on the construction site of the Pearl River Estuary Tunnel of the Shenzhen-Jiangmen High-speed Railway, a major transportation project in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), yesterday. The “Shenjiang No. 1,” the 13.42-meter-diameter tunnel boring machine (TBM) assisting the tunnel construction, advances 6-8 meters each day. The 13.69-km undersea tunnel, which is currently the deepest cross-harbor tunnel in China, is a key part of the Shenzhen-Jiangmen High-speed Railway, which will connect Qianhai & Shekou Area of China (Guangdong) Pilot Free Trade Zone in Shenzhen and the Nansha FTZ in Guangzhou. Upon completion in 2025, the 116-km railway will bring the cities of Shenzhen, Dongguan, Guangzhou, Zhongshan and Jiangmen closer and create a half-hour life circle between Qianhai and Nansha.
