SZ jumps 25 spots in global cities ranking

Shenzhen made a significant jump of 25 places to secure its No. 19 position at the recently released Schroders Global Cities Index ranking. The index looks to identify and rank the 30 best and brightest global cities.

The index uses a number of factors to identify the most economically vibrant cities from population age, median household income, university ranking, retail sales, GDP and transportation infrastructure.

Among the 30 cities on the list, seven are Chinese cities, namely Hong Kong (6), Shenzhen (19), Hangzhou (23), Beijing (25), Nanjing (27), Shanghai (28) and Chengdu (30).

In the ranking, Shenzhen takes first place among mainland cities. Shenzhen scored a total of 7.79 points out of the 10 full points. In economic vitality, it received 8.26 points, ranking sixth among top 30 cities. In environmental policies, it got 7.42 points ranking the 15th. In transportation infrastructure, which was included into the ranking factors for the first time, Shenzhen scored 9.15 points, taking the 14th position.

Seven cities from the U.S. also enter the top 30, same number as the Chinese cities. The world’s top 10 cities are London, San Francisco, Boston, Paris, New York, Hong Kong, Toronto, San Jose, Seattle and Melbourne.
