Passengers in Shenzhen and Guangzhou can use their respective Metro apps to pay when taking the Metro in both cities starting Thursday.

Shenzhen residents using the Shenzhen Metro (深圳地铁) app need to upgrade to the app’s latest version and switch the QR code to Guangzhou page to take the Guangzhou Metro.

The cross-city payments between Shenzhen and Guangzhou can only be made through WeChat Pay.

The QR codes’ connectivity aims to facilitate the travel between Shenzhen and Guangzhou, two core cities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), and play an active role in the GBA’s coordinated regional development.

Data from Shenzhen Metro Group showed that their passengers using QR codes for payment reached 2.93 million trips a day on average (excluding Line 4), accounting for 63.89 percent of the total daily passenger turnover.

Shenzhen Metro will also introduce QR code connectivity with other cities to provide passengers more convenience.

However, the operator stated that the mutual app service doesn’t cover Shenzhen’s Longhua tram line, Guangzhou’s tram lines, the Huadu-Qingcheng section of Guangzhou-Qingyuan Intercity Railway and Huadu-Baiyun Airport North section of Guangzhou East Ring Intercity Railway.
