Shenzhen is bracing for heavy rain and strong winds this week as a new round of severe weather moves across the region ahead of the May Day holiday travel peak.

China’s National Meteorological Center said a fresh wave of rainfall began affecting southern provinces late on April 25, bringing short bursts of intense precipitation, thunderstorms and strong convective winds.

Local authorities warned that weather conditions in Shenzhen will deteriorate from April 28 through April 29, with thunderstorms expected to bring heavy to torrential rain and gusts of around force 8 (62–74 kph).

The Guangdong Meteorological Service said most parts of the province will experience heavy rainfall between April 28 and April 29, with some areas facing severe downpours and stronger winds, along with localized short-duration intense rainfall.

In Shenzhen, rainfall during the peak period could reach heavy to torrential levels, before easing on April 30 as showers taper off and temperatures dip slightly. Unsettled conditions are expected to persist into the weekend, with intermittent showers and thunderstorms returning by May 3.

The broader Pearl River Delta region is expected to remain under unstable weather conditions through early May, potentially disrupting travel during one of the country’s busiest holiday periods.

Authorities have urged residents to take precautions against flooding, strong winds and reduced visibility, particularly during commuting hours. Travelers are advised to monitor weather updates closely and plan journeys to avoid periods of intense rainfall.
