About 93% of citizens chose public transport for commuting in 2021, a report on digital tools supporting green travel released Wednesday showed.
According to the report, Shenzhen citizens, who used the green travel function on the Tencent Map app to take the bus and Metro, were recorded to reduce carbon dioxide emissions of about 500,000 tons last year.
The reduced emissions are equivalent to the emissions from about 420,000 fuel vehicles (with a displacement of 1.5L) for a year, or the carbon sequestration of about 350 million trees, a forest the size of 80,000 football fields.
From 2019 to 2021, Shenzhen citizens reduced emissions of about 1.2 million tons by taking the Metro via the green travel function on the Tencent Map app.
Among the 93% interviewees who chose public transport for commuting, 75% of them were under the age of 39. Among all interviewees, walking and cycling accounted for 31% and 20%, respectively. Additionally, the proportion of interviewees taking taxis and ride-hailing services was 16%, and that of private cars was 10%. Moreover, 90% citizens were satisfied with Shenzhen’s public transport infrastructure, according to the report.
The app integrated all public travel functions such as bus and Metro codes, bus and Metro navigation, bicycle navigation and bike sharing in November last year. With the new function, citizens only need to use one map when taking public transport.
