Shenzhen's air quality ranked eighth out of 168 key Chinese cities, statistics from the Ministry of Ecology and Environment showed recently.

The city’s average PM2.5 concentration, a key indicator of air pollution, stood at 18 micrograms per cubic meter, a new record low since Shenzhen started to monitor its air quality, according to Shenzhen Special Zone Daily.

The top five cities are Haikou in Hainan Province, Lhasa in Tibet, Huangshan in Anhui Province, Zhoushan in Zhejiang Province and Fuzhou in Fujian Province.

The average PM 2.5 concentration of 339 Chinese cities above the prefecture level was 30 micrograms per cubic meter, down 9.1 percent year on year.

Shenzhen’s ecology and environment bureau said at a recent meeting that it will control the city’s average PM2.5 concentration under 18 micrograms per cubic meter this year.
