Sun Yat-Sen University Shenzhen Campus was officially put into use Monday with participation of 2,346 students from five departments of the Guangzhou campus, Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported.

In the new school year starting from Sept. 10, some 1,500 new students will begin their programs in the five departments including Electronics and Communication Engineering, Aeronautics and Astronautics, Intelligent Systems Engineering, Biomedical Engineering and Materials.

The Phase I project of the campus in Guangming District includes seven dormitory buildings and a canteen building. It also has five teaching buildings, totaling 80,000 square meters.

“The opening of the Shenzhen campus makes the extension of Sun Yat-sen University’s operation from Guangzhou and Zhuhai to Shenzhen. It marks the formation of ‘five school areas on three campuses,’ and lays the foundation for the university’s future development,” Luo Jun, president of the university and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said.

Reading rooms in the teaching building with a collection of 300,000 books also opened to teachers and students on the opening day. The library, which is still under construction, will have a collection of 5 million books upon completion.

In the 2021 school year when the projects are all completed, students from an additional five departments, namely Agriculture, Ecology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Public Health and Medicine, will also start living on the Shenzhen campus. The number of students will exceed 10,000, half the size of the total accommodation capacity.

A school affiliated with Sun Yat-sen University, a joint program signed by Guangming government with the university, will also be brought into use this September. The school will have 132 classes, offering 6,180 school places for primary and junior high school students.
