A baby, identified as Yueyue, underwent successful surgery at Shenzhen Children’s Hospital to treat epilepsy just 53 days after her birth, Daily Sunshine reported.

Yueyue is the youngest patient with the lowest bodyweight in the country to undergo seizures surgery so far.

The baby was showing abnormal behaviors two days after birth, such as frequent blinking and shaking of the hands and legs.

Coming from outside Guangdong Province, she was later diagnosed with infantile spasm by a local doctor.

Although given various kinds of treatments for her disease, she did not show any signs of improvement, so Yueyue’s parents took her to Shenzhen Children’s Hospital on Dec. 30 last year.

The root cause of Yueyue’s epilepsy was soon confirmed as Hemimegalencephaly. The left half of the baby’s brain was abnormally larger than the other, according to a team at the hospital, led by doctor Yao Yi.

Doctors at the hospital believed that medical treatments at that time would not do any good to the baby’s situation, which would more than likely bring about lung infection and a decline in nutrient levels.

Instead the team suggested immediate surgery.

Given the baby’s age and weight, which was only 4.8 kilograms, Yao and the team worked out detailed plans for the surgery.

“For example, the scalp cut should be fast and accurate and the amount of bleeding should be controlled within 1 milliliter,” said Yao.

The operation happened Jan. 14 and was successful. After the surgery, Yueyue did not develop any complications and was later allowed to be discharged from the hospital.

At present, Yueyue is living healthily and happily in her hometown, the report said.
