A theatrical performance featuring eight Shekou International School students from five countries and the humanoid robot Xia Lan kicked off celebrations for the 30th World Book Day, also known as World Book and Copyright Day, and the 10th Shenzhen Juveniles Reading Day at the Shenzhen Book City CBD Store on April 20. World Book Day falls on Wednesday this year.
Themed “Reading Illuminates the Light of Science,” the performance offered the audiences a fusion of science and storytelling by blending cutting-edge technology with literary classics.
Beyond the performance, Xia Lan demonstrated its versatility by co-hosting the opening ceremony with Shenzhen TV presenter Wang Hai-dong. Xia Lan had previously showcased its capabilities alongside China Central Television anchor Kang Hui during the opening of the 2024 Science and Innovation Conference.
Tang Hanlong, chairman of Shenzhen Publishing Group, said at the launch ceremony that this year’s reading series, with more than 100 activities in total, will run until May 5.
The activities, aiming to elevate public scientific literacy while reinforcing Shenzhen’s identity as a tech innovation hub, include sci-fi book exhibitions, AI interactive experiences, and youth innovation dialogues.
In a video message, Xavier Marcé, councilor for culture of the Barcelona City Council, said Barcelona takes pride in Shenzhen’s visionary program of promoting reading among the general public.
“For years, Barcelona has been a steadfast supporter of books and the publishing industry. As a UNESCO-designated City of Literature, our city celebrates World Book Day with a cherished tradition — people exchange books and roses. This day holds special significance for writers, publishers, and literary enthusiasts alike.”
“We take pride in Shenzhen, our sister city, for organizing such an inspiring series of events,” he said.
