Guangming focuses on three strategic sectors: information technology, advanced materials, and life sciences. The district hosts 23 major innovation platforms, including fully operational cutting-edge facilities dedicated to synthetic biology, brain analysis and simulation, and the materials genome. Research and development are bolstered by two research-intensive universities — Sun Yat-sen University (Shenzhen Campus) and Shenzhen University of Advanced Technology — as well as two Guangdong provincial laboratories: Shenzhen Bay Laboratory and Guangming Laboratory. Other renowned institutions include the Southern University of Science and Technology's Guangming Advanced Research Institute.
