Shenzhen aims to become a hub economy demonstration city with high-quality infrastructure, a resilient city able to make sustainable responses to changes and an innovative digital and smart city, an official said at a press conference at the Civic Center in Futian District on Friday.

The goals were set as the city’s latest move after it was named one of the country’s pilot cities for high-quality infrastructure development by the National Development and Reform Commission in December last year, said Huang Qiang, deputy secretary-general of the Shenzhen Municipal Government, at the conference.

“Shenzhen will make full use of the new-generation information technology to promote the crossover integration of new and traditional infrastructures so as to provide replicable experiences for the country in this aspect,” Huang said.

Shenzhen will strive to achieve full coverage of gigabit broadband in all residential compounds, raise the number of 5G base stations to 30 per 10,000 people, and build over 45,000 smart poles by the end of 2025, according to the conference.

It will also advance the construction of 18 key transport projects, such as Xili Comprehensive Transport Hub, and become an international comprehensive transport hub city by 2025, Huang said.

Listed among Guangdong’s key projects, the Xili hub in Nanshan District will introduce four high-speed railways, two intercity railways and four Metro lines, and shape the urban space together with public supporting facilities, urban roads and slow-traffic system with other cities. It will become Shenzhen’s most important gateway and urban vitality center.

Another highlight project is Shenzhen Airport East Integrated Transport Hub. Once completed, the interchange hub is expected to accommodate thousands of daily commuters moving between high-speed rails and other means of public transport.

It will also connect with Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport’s terminals, which, its designer, architecture firm Grimshaw, claims will make it “one of the most integrated transport interchanges in the world.”

According to Guo Ziping, head of the city’s development and reform commission, Shenzhen will build an efficient, smart, green and safe modern infrastructure network, upgrade the sustainable development capability of infrastructures, advance the construction of a batch of traditional and new infrastructure projects, and make an exemplary role in the nation’s high-quality infrastructure development.
