Shenzhen Museum's exhibition, "Starry Splendor on Clay: Exhibition of Painted Pottery of the Shenzhen Museum", features painted pottery from the museum's collection, showcasing the unique charm of this prehistoric art.

Painted pottery is a major category of ceramic art. It is an artistic achievement that builds on pottery-firing techniques, using painted decoration to pursue greater aesthetic value alongside functionality. Between about 7,000 BC and 3,000 BC, a sustained and extensive "Painted Pottery Age" took shape only in China, in the eastern half of Eurasia.

The exhibition covers five major archaeological cultures in the upper and middle reaches of the Yellow River from the Neolithic Age to the Bronze Age, including cultures Yangshao (5,000–3,000 BC), Majiayao (3,300–2,050 BC; derived from Yangshao), Zongri (3,650–2,050 BC), as well as Kayue (1,500–690 BC) and Xindian (1,400–700 BC) of northwest China. The exhibition also features Xiantouling culture of the Pearl River Delta (5,050–4,050 BC), which reflects Shenzhen's regional cultural identity.

The exhibition offers a new interpretation of the diversity and unity of Chinese civilization.
