The design for Xili Comprehensive Transport Hub in Nanshan District was unveiled, with the design plan named “A Win-Win Belt” chosen as the final winner for the Xili transport hub’s design competition, according to Shenzhen Metro Group.

The plan was made by a consortium of China Railway Siyuan Survey and Design Group Co. Ltd., Shenzhen Architecture Design Research Institute Co. Ltd., Shenzhen Urban Traffic Planning and Design Research Center Co. Ltd. and Nikken Sekkei Co. Ltd. in Japan. A total of 84 design institutions from 12 countries and regions participated in the competition.

The belt-shaped design links not only the south-north axis of the urban area, but also the east-west ecological axis of Xili area in northern Nanshan.

The architecture’s rooftop over the high-speed station will be built into an ecological park, providing a perfect leisure place for neighborhood residents and travelers.

The project will include a slow traffic system with two floors underground and three floors on the ground, and will connect the Metro stations with high-speed railway station, underground business centers, ground facilities and public space.

The Xili railway station will have a floor space of 1.46 million square meters and is budgeted at 31.2 billion yuan (US$4.68 billion). The hub project will have a floor space of 660,000 square meters and is budgeted at 17.7 billion yuan.

It will be a large-scale comprehensive transportation hub integrating high-speed railways, intercity rail links and urban rails. It serves as the departure station for the Ganzhou-Shenzhen, Shenzhen-Maoming and Shenzhen-Shenshan high-speed rails. Three intercity rails linking Shenzhen with Huizhou, Donguan and Zhuhai will make a stop at the hub. In addition, four Metro lines — lines 13, 15, 27 and 29 — will pass through the station.

Upon completion, it will be China’s biggest transport hub, which integrates high-speed and intercity railways, and Metro lines, and will be one of the world’s busiest transport hubs. Its daily passenger turnover will reach 1.3 million passenger trips, including 767,000 Metro passenger trips and 198,000 intercity railway passenger trips.

The Xili railway station will have 13 platforms and 25 train tracks, and it will be larger in size than Shenzhen North Railway Station. The high-speed rail town’s construction is backboned by the Xili station and has been listed as one of Guangdong’s key projects.

The project’s construction will start this year and finish in 2026.
