Major buildings along Shennan Boulevard switched off their exterior lighting from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Saturday for the annual Earth Hour event designed to encourage individuals, communities and businesses to turn off nonessential electric lights for one hour. The city’s electricity consumption dropped by 389,100 kWh compared to an hour before the event, equaling to a reduction of 387.93 tons of carbon dioxide emissions, according to the city’s power supply bureau. One Planet Foundation, co-organizer of the Earth Hour event in Shenzhen, also launched projects on the same day to call for efforts to reduce food waste and bring more nature education classes to people.
