Roughly 33,000 police officers were arranged each day to serve on roads or at exam sites in Shenzhen to ensure this year’s National College Entrance Exam (NCEE), commonly known as gaokao, would run smoothly from Monday to Wednesday.

During this year’s gaokao, the number of reports of traffic congestion was reduced by 40.8 percent since this time last year. Traffic police successfully escorted 521 buses, carrying some 22,000 students, to exam sites across the city.

In the meantime, the police helped 54 students rush to exam sites or pick up test admission materials. No student in the city missed the exam due to traffic reasons, according to Shenzhen Special Zone Daily.

A parent told a reporter with the Daily that police officers helped her when she was stuck on her way to drop her son off. Her son was a bit late for the exam because he had forgotten to take his exam admission ticket.

“The help was like offering fuel in snowy weather. Otherwise, my child would have missed his test. I really appreciated the help,” said the parent.

It is said that 2,000 motorcycle officers were working on roads during the three-day examination to ensure smooth traffic.

With the help of Longgang traffic police, a student surnamed Wang arrived at Pinggang High School before the start of the exam Tuesday.

Wang went to a hospital for an intravenous drip at 6 a.m. Tuesday before the test. There was only 15 minutes left for the test to start after she finished the drip, and so Wang’s father called police for help.

The Longgang police then sent Wang to the exam site in just four minutes via a police car.

Gaokao results will be announced June 26, as scheduled, while the college application will begin June 27.
