Shenzhen's air quality ranked fifth out of 168 key-monitored Chinese cities between January and April this year, statistics from the Ministry of Ecology and Environment showed Wednesday.

In the first four months, Lhasa, Haikou and Zhoushan ranked the top three among cities with good air quality.

Between January and April, the ratio of the number of good air quality days in 339 prefecture-level cities and above was 85.1%, up by 1.3 percentage points year on year. The average PM2.5 concentration, a key air pollution indicator, was 39 micrograms per cubic meter, down by 4.9%. The average PM10 concentration was 63 micrograms per cubic meter, down by 8.7% year on year.

In 2022, the city will further implement Shenzhen Blue Action Plan for Sustainability and enhance treatment over VOC (volatile organic compound) emission and NOx (nitrous oxides).

To reduce VOC emission, the city will complete the renovation of 100 gas-powered boilers with low-nitrogen combustion technology and put emphasis on treatment of 50 key enterprises producing VOCs.
