Mainalnd visitors to Hong Kong can pay for their train rides using WeChat Pay for Hong Kong Mass Transit Railway (MTR) mobile ticketing from Sunday (Feb. 20), Tencent’s WeChat Pay HK announced Monday.

This is a new addition to existing payment options such as MTR Mobile and AlipayHK. WeChat Pay users can use QR code tickets to go through MTR entry/exit gates except for the Airport Express stations. Users simply have to open the QR code or access the code through an interface shortcut setting for Hong Kong.

For QR code tickets, there are two types of fares — adult fares for passengers 12-64 years old, including students, and concessionary fares for children 3-11 years old and senior citizens aged 65 and above. The adult fare QR code is equivalent to an adult Octopus Card and the concessionary fare QR code (including AlipayHK EasyGo Child and Elderly) is equivalent to a child Octopus Card.

However, MTR rides interchanging at Tsim Sha Tsui Station or East Tsim Sha Tsui Station will be considered as two separate single journeys.

Passengers are advised to select their passenger type (adult or concessionary) or class (standard or East Rail Line first class) on the MTR Mobile QR Code Ticket. Passenger type or class cannot be changed after entering the gate or during the journey.
