Multiple international media outlets have published an article that featured a show at the Shenzhen subvenue of the opening ceremony of the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games on Friday night, highlighting Shenzhen’s innovative integration of fashion, science and technology into its celebration of the Games.

The media outlets included AP News, the Los Angeles Times, Boston Herald, Houston Chronicle, The UK News, Russia Herald, Dublin News, Irish Sun, and Europe Sun.

“The three-minute show in the city of Shenzhen adopted a variety of new technologies, new tools and new forms, featuring drones performing dizzying formations in the sky, gradually shaping from snowflakes to mascots of the Winter Games,” writes the AP article.

“The urban laser art performances illuminated the Chinese words ‘Tian Xia Yi Jia’ in the night sky, echoing the slogan of the Winter Games ‘Together for a shared future.’ Hundreds of citizens and artists dressed as snow fairies and flower fairies danced together to wish the country prosperity, safety and happiness,” reads the article.

“The collective display integrated fashion, technology and traditional Lingnan culture to offer the world’s stage a sense of the city’s charm, vitality and innovation,” writes the article.

In addition, a short video produced by Shenzhen to celebrate the Games was also released by international media outlets.

Shenzhen, though a city that hardly ever sees snow, sent its warm regards to the Olympics, staging an exclusive performance during the warm-up session of the opening ceremony held at the Bird’s Nest Stadium in Beijing on Friday night.

The performance infused Shenzhen’s technology, art and fashion elements into the city’s warm regards towards the Games, according to Xia Feng, chief director of the Shenzhen subvenue.

With a Winter Olympics-themed light show being staged on the skyline of the Futian CBD, the subvenue performances kicked off with an opening show integrating street dance, ballet, ballroom dance, cultural heritage performances including kirin and fish lantern dances, modeling, and roller skating.

The performers, led by dancers dressed as snow and flower fairies, depicted the way people in Shenzhen from all walks of life embrace and support the Games.

Expat performers from the Shenzhen Qianhai New Silk Road Culture Development Ltd. also participated in the performance.

Additionally, a special show by a total of 2,022 drones was staged along with the performance. The drones were arranged in the shapes of snowflakes and representations of Bing Dwen Dwen and Shuey Rhon Rhon, the mascots for the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, providing yet another highlight by the subvenue.

Robots developed by the Shenzhen-based tech company UBTECH also staged a show. Dressed in the traditional costumes of the 56 ethic groups in China and the outfits of winter sports athletes, they danced and performed winter sports movements such as skating and skiing.

A total of 17 athletes from Shenzhen are participating in the Games.
