Shenzhen's average PM2.5 concentration was 18 micrograms per cubic meter in 2021, ranking first in Guangdong in low density, a new low record in the city’s monitoring history, a source from the Shenzhen Ecological Environment Bureau showed.

For three straight years, the city’s PM2.5 was lower than the WHO Phase II standard, or 25 micrograms per cubic meter. Shenzhen’s average PM10 concentration was 37 micrograms per cubic meter in 2021, reaching the country’s Category I standard and days with good air quality reached 96.2 percent, statistics showed.

In 2021, the city further implemented Shenzhen Blue Action Plan for Sustainability, developed a special campaign against air pollution in autumn and wintertime, and further enhanced treatment of VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and NOx (nitrogen oxides).

To reduce VOC emission, Shenzhen unveiled an action plan to use low-volatility materials replacing VOCs. Over 300 key monitored enterprises have stopped using VOCs and 106 fuel stations and gas depots have installed devices for recyclable monitoring. In 2021, the city completed renovation of 43 boilers to reduce nitrogen emission.
