Work on four projects at Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport with a total investment of 1.2 billion yuan (US$188.3 million) started Tuesday, the first working day after the three-day New Year’s Day holiday.

The four projects are: a freight forwarding warehouse in the freight area, a taxiway south of the first runway, a taxiway in the eastern area and the operation and control center.

These projects are major infrastructures for construction during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025) which can further enhance Shenzhen airport’s capacity and elevate it to an international air transportation hub.

According to the airport, the freight forwarding warehouse is a two-building warehouse to serve freight forwarders. The two taxiway projects and road link projects aim to reduce jams and waiting time for flights during peak hours and improve flight efficiency and punctuality. The operation and control center has two buildings, one is a data center and the other is an operation and control building. It is a major infrastructure supporting digital transformation and smart airport construction.

The airport’s renovation and expansion have been included into the country’s 14th Five-Year Plan and Outline Development Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. In December last year, the Shenzhen airport put into use its satellite hall, the first 10-billion-yuan project after the Qianhai free trade area expansion. The third runway’s construction, Airport East Transport Hub and Terminal 2’s renovation are going smoothly. Upon completion of the projects, the airport will be an international comprehensive transport hub with three terminal areas, three runways and one satellite hall. The hub integrates land, air, ferry, high-speed rail, Metro and intercity railway services.

Shenzhen airport saw 36.35 million passenger trips in 2021, ranking third in the country. In terms of freight transportation, the airport handled 1.56 million tons of cargoes last year, up 12 percent year on year, also ranking third in the country.
