Over 150 new postgraduate students from Hong Kong, Taiwan and the Chinese mainland as well as foreign countries including India and the U.S. arrived at the Nanshan campus of Georgia Tech Shenzhen Institute (GTSI), Tianjin University to register for the fall term.

This year marks GTSI’s first year to officially recruit students around the world for its master’s degree programs in four majors, specifically electrical and computer engineering, computer science, environmental engineering and analytics, said GTSI.

Supported by the Shenzhen Municipal Government, GTSI is a Sino-foreign cooperative education entity between Tianjin University and the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech). GTSI was approved by the country’s education authority for establishment in March last year.

Admitted students can complete all required learning programs on its Shenzhen campus. GTSI shares the same standards with Georgia Tech in terms of admission procedure, curriculum and class designs, assessment mode and academic degree rules, according to GTSI.

Wang Haoren, from Taipei, Taiwan Province, decided to return to the campus after working at HTC in Taipei for two years. “Georgia Tech’s classes are high quality. I am sure that classes will be conducted in Shenzhen the same. Shenzhen is also close to Taiwan, so I chose to study in GTSI,” said Wang.

This is also Wang’s first time to visit Shenzhen. Wang said the city left a great impression on him. “I hope to find a job opportunity in Shenzhen after graduation,” he said.

Alexander Buddenbaum from Texas, the U.S. is among the new postgraduate students who major in computer science.

Buddenbaum said that he has adapted to the city’s life very quickly and likes Shenzhen’s good vibe for technological development.

Next year, more students will study in GTSI as the university will offer one more master’s degree program for industrial design and a Ph.D. program for electrical and computer engineering, according to GTSI.

Georgia Tech, founded in 1885, is said to be among the U.S.’s most research-intensive universities, with nearly 40,000 students who study in person at its main campus in Atlanta, at Georgia Tech-Lorraine in France, at GTSI, as well as through distance and online learning.
