Nanshan District held an event to celebrate this year’s World Environment Day on Saturday at Lixiang Park in the district.

The event, jointly organized by the Nanshan District Ecology Environment Sub-bureau and the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) China, included a session, in which residents can learn environment-related knowledge from various booklets, and a photo exhibition on the ecological environment in Nanshan.

The theme of this year’s World Environment Day in China is “Living in Harmony with Nature.”

A board was placed on site for residents to sign their names to publicly show their determination to protect the environment.

“Due to the pandemic, we have put prevention measures in place and only organized a photo exhibition and arranged a small area for residents to participate in the event. The photos show the beauty of Nanshan, which might help inspire residents to protect the environment. We hope to raise the awareness and encourage actions to protect our environment and Beautiful China by holding the event,” said Chen Jianzhun with the Nanshan sub-bureau.

“Both the government and NGOs have made great efforts regarding environmental protection. We are hoping to raise citizens’ awareness of not only tiny daily things, like garbage sorting, but also biodiversity via the event being held while they are visiting the park,” said Shi Ran, a staffer with One Planet Foundation, the host of the event.

Many of the citizens who joined the event lauded Shenzhen’s achievement in environmental protection, especially in the field of environmental education.

A parent, surnamed Wang, told Shenzhen Daily: “Guided by teachers, my daughter has developed a habit of protecting the environment. Sometimes, she even criticized my bad habit of wasting water.”

Also on Saturday, Shenzhen Emissions Exchange joined hands with nine local companies to establish cooperation and launch an initiative to encourage energy-saving and carbon-reducing behaviors.

The partnership will be devoted to quantifying carbon reduction behaviors of companies, residential communities and people, while rolling out incentive mechanisms and policies to encourage environmental protection practices.

Meanwhile, Tencent on Saturday announced it will also launch a WeChat miniprogram “Low-carbon Planet” in August, which can scientifically calculate the carbon emissions reduced by users’ green travel behaviors, such as taking the bus and subway, so as to promote environmental protection with personal actions.

In recent years, Shenzhen has put great efforts in building a new pattern of green and low-carbon development.

Shenzhen unveiled the world’s first gross ecosystem product (GEP) accounting system March 23.

GEP is a measure of the aggregate monetary value of ecosystem-related goods and services in a given region in an accounting period.

Meanwhile, Dapeng New Area in eastern Shenzhen recently launched the country’s first accounting guidelines on ocean carbon sink.
