Qin Weizhong was elected Shenzhen mayor at the closing meeting of the First Session of the Seventh Shenzhen Municipal People’s Congress, the city’s legislature, yesterday.
Born in 1971 and a native of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Qin graduated from Tsinghua University in 1996 with a master’s degree in chemical engineering and then later went on to obtain a doctorate in engineering in 2015.
Qin started his career as an engineer at Sinopec in 1996 and has over 20 years of work experience in China’s petrochemical industry.
From 2017 to 2019, he served as vice general manager of China National Petroleum Corp., a company director of PetroChina Co. Ltd., and chairman of China Petroleum Engineering Co. Ltd.
Qin was appointed Guangdong vice governor in March 2019. In April 2021, he was appointed Shenzhen’s vice mayor and acting mayor.
Seven vice mayors were also elected at yesterday’s meeting.
