The National (Shenzhen Qianhai) New-type Internet Exchange Point was inaugurated in Qianhai on Wednesday afternoon.

Shenzhen is among three cities approved by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology in December to pilot the construction of the new-type Internet exchange point. It is the first national infrastructure in the field of information and communication for Shenzhen.

The other two cities are Hangzhou in Zhejiang Province and Zhongwei in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.

Yuan Fuyong, vice director of the Qianhai authority, said that the new-type Internet exchange point is important to the upgrading of China’s Internet infrastructure and an innovation on the Internet traffic exchange model.

According to Yuan, users can access multiple networks for information exchange through the Internet exchange point. “It is conducive to improving the city’s Internet connection efficiency and optimizing user experience through lowering the complexity of network interconnections, as well as providing strong support for the quality development of Shenzhen’s digital economy,” Yuan said.

The Internet exchange point will be operated by a joint venture invested by 10 enterprises, including Qianhai Service Group, China Mobile, China Unicom, China Telecom, Dr. Peng Group and Shenzhen Media Group.

Some 10 enterprises became the first batch of corporate users at the Internet exchange point in Qianhai after subscription at the inauguration ceremony.
