Shenzhen in recent years has adopted the strictest standards to build garbage disposal facilities in a bid to address the issue of garbage piling up around the city, Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported.

“This is not like a trash handling place. I found no waste at the plant. It is much more like a park, a very modern and clean plant without any stinky smell,” said a visitor to the Yantian energy eco-park.

It is said that more than 52,000 people visited the Yantian energy eco-park in a year to learn about the city’s advanced ways to dispose of garbage.

In fact, in addition to the Yantian energy eco-park, Shenzhen has also endeavored to build modern and environmentally-friendly power plants with functions, including garbage disposal, electricity generation, education and industrial tourism.

Shenzhen’s rapid development in the past 40 years has brought in a huge population to the city. The large amount of trash thus became an issue that needed to be addressed.

Shenzhen decided to use an incineration strategy for garbage disposal and adopted international standards to promote the construction of energy eco-parks in 2015.

In 2017, Shenzhen implemented strict emission standards for garbage incineration plants. The standards are tougher than the current national standards and those applied in Japan and the EU, according to the municipal urban management authority.

By the end of 2017, the city completed renovations on the emission systems at four energy eco-parks in Nanshan, Yantian and Bao’an districts.

As new phases of the three energy eco-parks in Nanshan, Bao’an and Longgang districts have been put into use in 2019, ahead of schedule, the city’s garbage disposal capability has been increased up to 20,000 tons per day.

Shenzhen is also among first-tier cities in the country to achieve a full incineration of sorted garbage, said the report.

At present, the construction of the Phase-II factory of the Nanshan energy eco-park, located at the north side of Mawan Port in Nanshan, is ongoing.

A staffer with the factory said that Phase-II project will include a recycling museum, swimming pool and corridor for information dissemination.

A book bar and cafe house will also be introduced to Longgang and Bao’an energy eco-parks.

Meanwhile, electronic screens have been placed at energy eco-parks to display monitoring data for the purpose of transparency.
