The organizers, China State Railway Group Co. Ltd. and Shenzhen government, have revealed the architecture design competition winner for the Shenzhen Airport East Comprehensive Transportation Hub.
A group comprised of four enterprises, Grimshaw Architects, Mott MacDonald Consulting Beijing Co. Ltd., China Aviation Planning and Design Institute (Group) Co. Ltd. and Beijing Urban Construction Design and Development Group Co. Ltd., won the design with a bidding price of 115 million yuan (US$17.51 million).
The project will include seamless transportation by offering plane, high-speed rail, intercity rail and Metro services. It will be a world-class comprehensive transportation system and an experimental project for the efficient utilization of urban spaces. Plans for a massive underground project have been made for in the 100-hectare airport area in the city’s west.
According to the city’s rail construction plan (2016-2030), two additional high-speed railways — one linking Shenzhen and Maoming in western Guangdong and the other between Shenzhen and Shenshan Special Cooperation Zone — will be built. The two railways will have a stop at the Airport East transportation hub in Shenzhen.
The hub will have six platforms and 14 railway lines and will be connected through rapid transit systems with Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport terminals, Metro Lines 1, 12, 20 and 26, and the Shenzhen-Daya Bay intercity rail.
Upon completion, the new hub will also link the in-service Xiamen-Shenzhen High-speed Railway with the to-be-built Shenzhen-Maoming High-speed Railway, planned to link Shenzhen with Dongguan, Guangzhou, Zhongshan, Jiangmen, Yangjiang and Maoming.
The Shenzhen-Daya Bay intercity rail will also be connected to the Airport East transportation hub. This rail will run along the northern part of the city, passing Bao’an, Longhua, Longgang and Pingshan districts in Shenzhen and Daya Bay in Huizhou.
The second high-speed rail between Shenzhen and Guangzhou will also have a stop in the hub. It will link the key knots of Guangzhou-Shenzhen Science and Innovation Corridor, specifically Qianhai in Nanshan, Dongguan’s CBD and Guangzhou Science Town.
According to the plan, the core area of the hub will cover 67.7 hectares, and be encompassed by Hangzhan No. 6 Road, Hangzhan No. 7 Road, Bao’an Boulevard and Xinghua Road.
The land surrounding the core area is also considered important for future coordinated development. The land covers 194 hectares and is encompassed by Bao’an Boulevard, Xiashiwei Road, Huaide South Road, 107 National High Way and Huaxin Road.
