Guangzhou-Shenzhen Expressway, one of the busiest expressways in China, will be expanded to have 10 lanes going in each direction, and even 12 lanes in some areas, from the current six lanes.

A notice for the bidding of design and survey of the Shenzhen-Guangzhou section of Beijing-Hong Kong-Macao Expressway unveiled on the official website of the Guangzhou Public Resources Trading Center on Monday disclosed the renovation project is budgeted at 47.1 billion yuan (US$7.3 billion) and will take five years to complete.

Guangzhou-Shenzhen Expressway, which was put into use in July 1997, is an important expressway linking Guangzhou, Dongguan, Shenzhen and Hong Kong. Part of Beijing-Hong Kong-Macao Expressway (G4) and Shenyang-Haikou Expressway (G15), the expressway is regarded as a golden corridor of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

The renovation project was started with the renovation of Xintang Flyover in July last year. Xintang is an important connection point on the Guangzhou-Dongguan-Shenzhen golden corridor and the science corridor. It is at the juncture of Guangzhou-Shenzhen Expressway and Guangshen Boulevard, part of National Highway 107.

The main line of the expressway in Xintang will be expanded to have six lanes in each direction. In addition, 130,000 square meters of noise-proof structures will be built. The project will improve the connectivity of Xintang Flyover with nearby roads.

The expressway starts from Huangcun Flyover in Guangzhou and ends at Huanggang Tollgate in Shenzhen.

The renovation project covers 118.2 kilometers and the renovated road is designed for speeds of 100-120 kilometers per hour.
