Vehicles leaving the city for holiday trips during the Spring Festival holiday period will drop by half to around 400,000 to 500,000, according to police estimates.

Due to the grim situation of the pandemic, police are predicting an unprecedented traffic pressure within the city during the Spring Festival holidays as so many people will choose to stay in the city.

Records of the past three years show around 1.1 million vehicles left the city for the Spring Festival holidays. Police estimate the peak for vehicles leaving the city this year to hit the last weekend ahead of the lunar New Year holidays, or on the 25th or 26th day of the 12th month of the Chinese lunar calendar, but the vehicle flows will be greatly reduced.

Data shows around 450,000 vehicles came to Shenzhen to spend the holidays and visit before the Spring Festival holiday period, while 170,000 came during the holiday period in recent years.

Police estimate the number of vehicles coming to Shenzhen will increase this year, putting a heavy strain on roads to tourist attractions, parking lots, agricultural markets, business centers and transportation hubs.

Police will launch a 50-day action and implement 50 measures to ensure road traffic safety starting from today.

Police will also set up a command office to coordinate related departments, and ensure highly efficient and safe holiday traffic.
