City home to most barcode-using firms

Shenzhen has seen 5,017 newly registered enterprises that use barcodes from January to October this year, an increase of 14.9 percent year on year, according to Shenzhen Institute of Standards and Technology.


As of the end of October, Shenzhen had a total of 22,597 registered barcode-using enterprises, ranking first among major cities in China.


Meanwhile, the city currently has nearly 21 million pieces of product information, accounting for 15 percent of the national total.


Statistics showed that Shenzhen’s export and domestic market commodity circulation remains very active, demonstrated by the trends of barcode registration and renewal.


According to data, from January to October, there were 5,248 enterprises renewing barcodes in Shenzhen, a year-on-year increase of 4.5 percent. During the same period, the city registered 1.6 million pieces of new product information, an increase of 8.2 percent compared with the end of last year.


The new product information mainly involves clothing, suitcases, bags, communications equipment, household appliances, sports equipment, crafts, jewelry, food and beverage, medical equipment, electronic components, furniture and various spare parts.


Looking at the types of business entities using barcodes, the business entities mainly include wholesale and retail enterprises such as department stores, shops, e-commerce businesses and supermarkets, and foreign trade enterprises specializing in export and large-scale manufacturing enterprises.
