Work on Phase II of Southern University of Science and Technology Hospital (SUSTech Hospital) started Wednesday at the foot of Shigu Hill in Xili, Nanshan District.

The project covers 4,200 square meters and has a floor space of 93,000 square meters. It will offer 1,200 to 1,500 beds upon completion in 2023. The 27-story building for surgical departments is budgeted at a total investment of 1.1 billion yuan (US$162.4 million).

A helipad will be designed on top of the building with an elevator that enables patients to reach the first floor emergency wards in two minutes.

The architecture makes full use of the natural resources of Shugu Hill and connects with the mountainous landscaping through aerial bridges.

The area surrounding the hospital will be a health-themed park. The hospital is located close to Dasha River economic belt, Liuxiandong headquarters base for strategic emerging industries, Vanke Cloud City, Xili Lake International Science and Education City and Xili High-speed Rail New Town.

According to Pei Guoxian, head of the hospital, the hospital intends to be a grade 3A hospital, the top level of China’s three-tier hospital grading system, in five years.

The SUSTech Hospital took shape from the original Xili Hospital and construction of Phase II marked a milestone for the hospital’s development. The university’s affiliated hospital will be a first-class comprehensive hospital in China with medical, research and teaching functions, serving the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
