Shenzhen police will officially impose fines on nonlocally registered vehicles that violate the rules during weekday rush hours.

Nonlocally registered vehicles are required to operate on designated roads to the airport, checkpoints and terminals during weekday rush hours. Otherwise they will be fined, according to the rules.

The rule had been suspended due to the COVID-19 outbreak, but on the first day of its reimposition Thursday police data shows the congestion index dropped by 45.6 percent at 8:30 a.m. compared with data in June.

From 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. Thursday, police received 24 congestion reports, a decrease of 46.67 percent.

Data showed the number of vehicles during the morning rush hours Thursday was reduced by 366,000, or 16.6 percent, and the number of nonlocally registered cars was reduced by 212,400, or 57.5 percent, compared with the number before the ban was reimposed.

Some 5,859 nonlocally registered vehicles were warned for breaking the rule.

After the grace period this week, police will impose a 300-yuan (US$42) fine and add three penalty points to the driver’s license for violating the ban starting from Monday.
