Peking University Shenzhen Hospital (PKUSZH) has recently successfully completed the world’s first case of treating diffuse large B-cell lymphoma and lupus erythematosus by using compound dual-target CAR-T cell immunotherapy, Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported yesterday.
The patient, in her 40s, lives in Yichang, Hubei Province, and has suffered systemic lupus erythematosus for more than 20 years. In June 2019, she was diagnosed with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, a highly aggressive tumor.
The patient went to PKUSZH for treatment in mid-August 2019, and was lucky to get the opportunity to participate in a clinical trial involving hematological cancer in the hospital. A month later, she received compound dual-target CAR-T (CD19/BCMA) cell immunotherapy.
According to Zhang Wenli, the woman’s attending doctor at the hospital, the patient’s disease was very special, because there was not only aggressive lymphoma in the patient’s body, but also high titers of lupus erythematosus autoantibodies, which made it difficult to control the disease in the long term.
The CAR-T cell immunotherapy turned out to be successful and the patient hasn’t developed any serious complications.
After one month of treatment, the lymphoma in the woman’s body completely disappeared, and she did not have to use a wheelchair and could walk on her own two months after treatment.
At present, her lupus erythematosus has been clinically cured and she no longer needs to take medicine every day.
