THE renovation of the century-old Pinghu Railway Station will be completed in July.

It will be used to serve intercity bullet trains between Shenzhen and Guangzhou. The schedule will be announced by the China Railway Corp.

In the future, the railway station will serve travelers to Shantou, Chaozhou and Xiamen. The Huizhou-Shenzhen intercity rail will be linked with Pinghu station through Nanping railway, which links Qianhai and Pinghu. The Shenzhen section of the rail runs 70 kilometers with 10 stations.

The Pinghu station will be expanded into a transport hub, where Metro Line 10, which links to Futian Checkpoint, and Metro Line 13, which links to the airport area, will meet.

In the future, travelers will be able to reach Futian in 20 minutes by taking Line 10, or reach Luohu in 20 minutes by taking Line 17. They can get to Qianhai in 30 minutes by taking trains to Nanshan and Qianhai.

In 2014, the Guangzhou-Shenzhen Railway Co. decided to renovate the century-old station which had been inactive for eight years. The station is expected to boost the economy in Pinghu, home to China South City, the Hi-Green Agricultural Produce Market, the Finance and Modern Service Base and Egongling High-tech Industrial Park. The number of people living in Pinghu and neighboring Fenggang and Guanlan is about 1.7 million.

For residents who live in Longgang and want to go to Guangzhou, the opening of the station could save about one hour.

Currently travelers in Longgang need to take public transportation to the Shenzhen Railway Station in Luohu before heading to Guangzhou.

Huang Xiang, a deputy with the Shenzhen Municipal People's Congress, proposed renovating Pinghu station and connecting it with the Guangzhou-Shenzhen rail. This could relieve Pinghu traffic pressure and be helpful in promoting the integration of Shenzhen, Dongguan and Huizhou.

Pinghu station was put into use in October 1911, when the Guangzhou-Kowloon rail was put into operation. The service was suspended in 2006.

In another development, rapid rail transit between Pingshan and Futian will start this July, cutting the trip between the two areas within 30 minutes.

This will be the second rapid rail transit after Xiamen-Shenzhen Railway Co. opened the service between Pingshan and Longhua in September last year.

During a radio show, Tao Yongxin, head of the Pingshan New Area Administration Committee, revealed Metro lines 16 and 14 are part of the Metro construction Phase IV. Tao also said three expressways, including the Eastern Border Crossing Expressway, Phase III of Nanping Expressway and Outer Ring Expressway, will finish construction and open to traffic in 2018.
