2 new cases include SZ's first Omicron infection

Shenzhen reported two confirmed cases of COVID-19 as of 8 p.m. today after no new cases were reported yesterday, according to a notice released by the municipal health commission tonight.

One of the two new patients was infected with the Omicron variant, according to the commission.

Case 16 is a 24-year-old womanwho lives and works in Longgang District. She is case 2’s colleague and lives in Guangyayuancun, Bantian Subdistrict. She was put under quarantine as a close contact Jan. 7 and was diagnosed as a confirmed case of COVID (common type).

Case 17 is a 21-year-old woman who works in Longgang District and is mainly engaged in receiving and delivering overseas frozen chemical reagents. She lives in Lanyi Village, Baolong Subdistrict.

The case was discovered in the third round of nucleic acid screening in Pingshan District yesterday and was diagnosed as a mild case of COVID-19. The genome sequencing results showed that she was infected with the Omicron variant.

The two cases have been transferred to the Third People’s Hospital of Shenzhen for treatment and are in stable condition. Their neighborhoods and workplaces have been placed under lockdown, while screening of their close contacts and secondary contacts are under way.

No further information regarding the new infections is currently available.

As of 8 p.m. today, Shenzhen had reported 17 COVID-19 cases amid the latest local COVID resurgence.
