The Shenzhen city government has set up an award of up to 5 million yuan (US$704,225) to encourage local technology companies to develop effective COVID-19 detection equipment and reagents for use at hospitals as well as community clinics and public places before April 4, Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported yesterday.
According to the Shenzhen Municipal Science and Technology Innovation Commission on Saturday, the award has been designed to respond to the city’s urgent COVID-19 prevention and control needs. It will be awarded to local technology companies with winning R&D projects involved in automatic high-throughput detection equipment and virus reagents that can be used in large public hospitals and anti-epidemic institutions. Companies developing on-site express screening equipment and reagents to be used in community clinics and public places to single out individuals suspected of being infected with COVID-19 will also be eligible for the award.
The award is capped at 5 million yuan for each equipment category, the Daily said, adding that the final amount of the award given to a winning company will be the lower value between the amount applied for by the winning company and the evaluation amount reached by the judging panel of experts.
