Lu Hongzhou, president of the Third People’s Hospital of Shenzhen, reminded residents of following COVID safety protocols and encouraged them to stay put during the upcoming May Day holiday, which falls from Saturday to May 4, Shenzhen Evening News reported.

A festival travel rush could elevate the transmission risk amid the resurgence of COVID reported in several Chinese cities, according to Lu.

Residents are advised to not go to medium- and high-risk areas for COVID and places reporting positive cases or leave Guangdong Province unless necessary.

“We are asking all residents to minimize their travels, and avoid unnecessary gatherings or bringing children, the elderly and the infirm to crowded public spaces,” Lu said.

He pointed out that wearing masks is most beneficial to prevent infection indoors and in crowded or poorly ventilated locations. Masks are also required for any close contact with deliverymen and others.

According to safety tips at social gatherings, citizens are suggested to wash hands frequently, use serving chopsticks and keep social distancing. People who are feeling sick should not visit others or see visitors.

Lu reminded people to self-monitor their personal health status. Those who exhibit symptoms such as fever, cough, fatigue, sore throat, loss of taste or smell and diarrhea, should not travel to work or socialize with others. They should get tested and see a doctor.

“Personal protection measures are vital all the same,” Lu stressed.
