Shenzhen built the National Cycad Conservation Center, the National Orchid Conservation Center, the National Gesneriaceae Plant Conservation Center and the Ferns Conservation Center for the ex-situ conservation of cycads, orchids, magnolias and ferns. In 2008, the first case of “plant return” took place in China, in which 500 Cycas debaoensis successfully cultivated in Shenzhen were returned to Debao to be planted. In 2012, Shenzhen accomplished the project that helped endangered Paphiopedilum purpuratum return to the wild. In addition to plant conservation, Shenzhen provides technology and human resources for the ex-situ conservation site and establishes industry standards for plant return.
