Rio de Janeiro (Portuguese: Rio de Janeiro, meaning "River of January"), or Rio for short, was once the capital of Brazil (1763-1960), located in the southeastern coastal region of Brazil, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean in the southeast, with a coastline of 636 kilometers. Rio de Janeiro mainly belongs to the savanna climate, with high temperature all year round, small annual and daily temperature difference, and relatively even seasonal distribution.

Shenzhen Mayor Qin Weizhong signed a Memorandum of Friendship Exchange and Cooperation with Eduardo Paes, mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, through a recent video link.

Mayor Qin said that he looked forward to deepening exchanges and cooperation between the two cities on the sectors of industrial development, sci-tech innovation, culture, sports and tourism, low-carbon industry and smart city construction, among others, during the online meeting with his Rio counterpart.

Qin said that Shenzhen and Rio have had a very good basis for cooperation, and he hoped that the memorandum will serve as a new starting point for the two cities to expand cooperation for common prosperity and development, and jointly promote the well-being of people in the two cities.

Qin said he hoped the two sides will work together to promote the continuous and in-depth development of the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Brazil.

Paes said that Shenzhen and Rio are both innovation-oriented cities with great potential for economic and trade development.

He said the signing of the memorandum will provide a good opportunity for both sides to share valuable experiences, foster good practices, and create pioneering projects involving social environment responsibility, and finding innovative solutions to challenges related to sustainability, urban mobility and digital transformation.
