Shenzhen exported 10.75 billion yuan (US$1.66 billion) worth of lithium-ion batteries in the first five months of this year, up 61.7 percent year on year, according to statistics from Shenzhen Customs.

Lithium-ion batteries worth 2.27 billion yuan were exported to the European Union, up 149.9 percent year on year, while the value of exported lithium-ion batteries to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was 1.29 billion yuan, up 46.1 percent.

The pandemic has resulted in soaring global demands for solar energy storage products and batteries for industrial use, as people are spending longer hours at home and some countries are suffering from power supply challenges.

Companies in related fields already saw a surge in orders. Their pressure to deliver products within the required time period would be further highlighted considering the global shortage of shipping containers that started in the second half of last year, according to Shenzhen Economic Daily.

The Guanlan branch of Shenzhen Customs has lent help to a company called Shenzhen Huabao New Energy after learning that the company once failed to export their batteries due to the lack of knowledge on hazardous products policies. The customs then established a new energy inspection and supervision team to help the firm apply for the verification of packages used for hazardous products by introducing required policies and practical plans since the beginning of this year.

With the help of customs officers, the double wallpaper boxes used by the company to hold hazardous lithium-ion batteries have passed required checks.
